freshly emerged adult caterpillar pupa newly hatched from pupa Hellinsia sp. maybe H. homodactylus or Emmelina monodactyla (Lower Vine Brook, 6/24/2020 2pm, caterpillar 6/7/2020 4pm, pupa and empty pupa with adult 6/26/2020 5pm) The caterpillars eat Joe-Pye Weed. Some of the moths had the black spots on the abdomen and some did not. Also, some of the caterpillars didn't have the yellow spot, but it is possible that the yellow spot only occurs in the last instar. It is also possible that I had a mixture of multiple species that fed together.

6092 Geina tenuidactylus (Himmelman's Plume Moth) (Willard's Woods, 7/2/02 11am)

pupa (Lower Vine Brook, pupa 6/12/11 2pm, adult 6/26/11 11am) My guess is that the caterpillar had just pupated when I found it, so it took about 2 weeks to metamorphize. The chrysalis turned brown within a day or two.

I did a little better with the second 2 photos, but even 1/1000 sec shutter speed was too slow to freeze the wings well. I could also have used my 300mm lens...
