This is the largest category I've made. Many of the moths are strikingly patterned, and a few are brightly colored.

adult male cocoon 7757 Antheraea polyphemus polyphemus (Polyphemus moth) (Lexington, 7/23/05 11pm, Lower Vine Brook, 6/15/2019, cocoon 5/6/2019 1pm) The first photo is of a male on his last legs. Both his hindwings had been lost and his right forewing was almost completely severed. I found him hanging from a raspberry bush under my moth light. The second male hatched from the cocoon on the same day the photos were taken. I found the cocoon tangled in the stems of a Spirea plant in my garden, more or less beneath a birch tree. I believe the caterpillar lived in the birch.

8801 Catocala ilia (Ilia underwing) (Lexington, caterpillar 5/29/06 1pm, moth 7/1/06 11am) The caterpillar was found on an oak tree trunk. It thrashed wildly to appear threatening, periodically flipping upside-down to display its purplish belly. This is the first caterpillar I've raised to an adult. It started to pupate underground a day or two after we found it. I believe it emerged the night before I photographed it, although it is possible that I didn't see it for a day or two.

I was hoping it would spread its wings and reveal its brightly colored hind wing. What it did was walk around on the stick and my finger, not spread its wings, and then fly away never to be seen again.

Calophasia lunula (Toadflax brocade) (Lower Vine Brook, 6/26/2020 5pm) A European import to control butter-and-eggs (Linaria vulgaris). It was on a grass stem, not butter-and-eggs, and I couldn't find any butter-and-eggs in the immediate vicinity, although I know there is some in the meadow.
