Beetles

I do not have an inordinate fondness for beetles, so my collection of beetle photos is quite small. Mostly I've photographed either the big ones or the colorful ones.

Cicindela sexguttataCicindela sexguttata (Six-Spotted Green Tiger Beetle) (Dunback Meadow, 5/19/09 11am, Lower Vine Brook, 4/28/13 11am)

Calleida punctata (Lower Vine Brook, 8/3/14 1pm)

Carabus auratus (Lower Vine Brook, 7/6/09 12pm) A deliberate introduction from Europe. This was quite a large beetle, perhaps 20mm long. I would have liked to get a better photo, but I couldn't coax it out of the underbrush.

Polydrusus sp. (Willard's Woods, 6/15/06 6pm, also 6/8/02 11am) A European import.

(Lower Vine Brook, 7/1/08 1pm)

(Lower Vine Brook, 6/20/15 2pm) I'm guessing these are Red milkweed beetle larvae.

Pelidnota punctataGrapevine beetlePelidnota punctata (Grapevine beetle) (Lexington, 7/19/05, 11pm, 7/17/02 11pm)

Calligrapha sp. (Lower Vine Brook, 5/16/2020 3pm)

Calligrapha sp. (Willard's Woods, 6/9/04 3pm) I didn't realize that there are a number of Calligraphica species, each of which more or less specializes on a specific host plant. I think, but am no longer sure, that the beetle was on the plant I found it on and handn't flow to a different one.

(Burlington, 6/23/00 6pm) This beetle looks like it should be closely related to M. robiniae, above, but I can't find a good match. It is close to one of the Clytus species, but not quite right. Unfortunately, my photos aren't great.

(Lower Vine Brook, 7/14/13 12pm) This patch of leaf litter was right next to the fungi photographed above. I was aiming for the black beetle, but closer inspection of the photo showed another brown beetle in the lower right, a baby spider, two ticks or mites (hopefully mites, but they look more like ticks), another fungus beetle like those above, 2 purplish springtails (horribly out of focus), and a truly tiny beetle above and to the left of the black one.
